As is well known, Jean Guitton is surely one of the most important Catholic philosophers of the twentieth century, which can be attributed to the fact that he was the only layman to be invited to take the floor at the Second Vatican Council. It is not so commonly known, though, that Guitton also had an interest in painting and that he always considered painting as a sort of “completion” of his philosophy, through which he could intuitively and analogically investigate the same issues that he rationally and argumentatively discussed in his books and essays. This article intends to examine the very close connections between these two spheres of the Guittonian work with the goal to specify how and through which ways the paintings of the French philosopher could have taken their decisive elements from the philosophical concepts developed in his rich written production.

The parish church of the Corpus Christi in Aachen, reconstructed by Rudolf Schwarz, is arguably one of the most renowned churches in modern Europe. The one true visual and symbolic focus of Schwarz’s design is the church’s monumental presbyterium, which rests on an elevated podium at the main nave’s far end. At the turn of the 1980s, the original design for the presbyterium was altered—subtly, yet resolutely—through the addition of a dais topped by an ambo and a newly designed Eucharistic altar. The original and the modified configurations of the church will be discussed at due length. It will be argued that, while bringing the celebration nearer to the community, the new presbyterium is by no means closer to the eyes of the laymen. Furthermore, we will contend that the transformation of the church severed the bond between space and liturgical action that lay at the very core of the original design.

“Costruire ponti.

Among the most notable exhibition events that sparked interest in the Parisian autumn of 2017, the exhibition Chrétiens d’Orient. Deux mille ans d’histoire, held at the Institut du monde arabe, deserves special attention for various reasons: its scientific rigor, its captivating narrative structure, the quality of the artifacts on display, and, above all, its ability to synthesize in one exhibition the complexity of the social, cultural, and religious intertwining that has marked the history of Eastern Christians. From a territorial perspective, the curators focused especially on the area of the Near East (which today corresponds to six Arab countries: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the Palestinian Territories, and Egypt), while not neglecting some insights into the Armenian region. The narrative that unfolds throughout the exhibition path thus captures the common features of Christianity in the Arab world, while highlighting the presence and actions of different Christian denominations.

Notiziario
Valentino Vago, one of the most significant figures of contemporary abstractionism, passed away on January 17th. He was born in Barlassina in 1931 and studied at the Brera Academy, gaining recognition as early as 1955 at the Rome Quadriennale. In the 1970s, he was one of the key figures, along with Oliveri, Verna, Raciti, and others, of analytical painting, a trend that aimed not to paint in order to depict things, figures, or geometries, but to analyze the fundamental elements of painting: to paint in order to understand what color is, what space is, what a line is. For Vago, this trend translated into a painting of pure color, with few luminous signs scattered across the canvas. He deeply loved color. I remember that when we met at the meetings of the Consultative Committee for Sacred Art, of which we were both members, he would look with kind reproach at the works of certain craftsmen that were certainly not art, let alone sacred art. “Yet it would take so little: just use color, there is everything there,” he would say.
