Sommario

Summary

The Antichrist as depicted in the Old Testament of the Moralized Bibles resembles the Antichrist of the Book of Revelation in the same manuscripts: a human-looking being with a monstrous head, sometimes with animal feet. Sometimes he is confused with the devil, especially when he is depicted half-naked with a simian or leonine face.
He is also sometimes portrayed as a king, especially when he is prefigured by the cursed kings Abimelech, Jsboseth and Antiochus Epiphanes. However, his nature is very different in the Old Testament, where he is understood primarily in reference to the beast of the abyss of Rev 11, 7. This explains why he became the murderer of Enoch and Elijah, as in his legend, an aspect of this character that is never retained in the Apocalypses of moralized Bibles. The glosses and images that comment on his misdeeds are in the two Vienna Bibles often antisemitic in character. Finally, it should be noted that the Antichrist of the Moralized Bibles corrected the kingly image given around 1200 by the Amiens Bible and especially by the Hortus Deliciarum.
