Sommario

Summary

Relying on iconographical, historical-artistic, hagiographical, and hermeneutical arguments, the author examines the identity of the saint depicted in Francesco Guardi’s painting, currently housed in Vienna. The study challenges the dubious identification of the figure as Blessed Gundisalvus of Amarante and instead reinstates the identification with the Polish Dominican Saint Hyacinth Odrowąż, a view widely accepted by art historians until the 1960s. However, the painting is not a conventional depiction based on a specific episode from the saint’s biography. Rather, while referencing biographical elements, the work serves as a metaphor for the salvation offered by faith to a world in decay, with the decline of the Serenissima Republic of Venice discernible in the background.
