Minor White è una figura centrale nella fotografia della seconda metà del XX secolo. In mezzo alla profonda crisi dei valori spirituali che avevano sostenuto gli Stati Uniti d’America, White intraprende un viaggio solitario creando un legame irreversibile tra il lavoro fotografico e la misura della preghiera e della contemplazione. White segue e migliora la teoria e la pratica di Alfred Stieglitz, secondo cui la fotografia è l’equivalente visibile dell’esperienza interiore del cuore. La fotografia di White è organizzata secondo sequenze misurate, articolate come metriche nella poesia, che accompagnano sempre la sua creazione visiva. Il presente saggio mette in relazione l’avventura di White con la religione cristiana, ma anche con il buddismo, seguito da molti artisti dell’epoca.
Minor White is a main figure in the photography of the second half of the 20th Century. In the midst of the deep crisis of the spiritual values that had supported the United States of America, White undertakes a lonely journey creating an irreversible connection between the work of photography and the measure of prayer and contemplation. White follows and improves the theory and the practice of Alfred Stieglitz, according to whom photography is the visible equivalent of the interior experience of the heart. White’s photography is organized according to measured sequences, articulated like metrics in poetry, that always accompanies his visual creation. The present essay relates White’s adventure to Christian religion, but also to Buddhism, followed by many artists at that time.
