Questo breve saggio propone alcune possibili linee di indagine sulla percezione visiva di una chiesa storica. Cercheremo di descrivere come la mente visiva costruisce un certo modello di spazio a partire dai dati raccolti attraverso l’esperienza cinestetica di un osservatore nel tempo. Argomenteremo quindi che alcune trasformazioni materiali di un edificio storico—danni, ricostruzioni, rimozioni, restauri—possono cambiare radicalmente la sua immagine visiva, mentre altre possono avere un effetto minore sulla percezione complessiva del suo spazio. L’immagine di una chiesa storica sarà intesa come una combinazione di presenza attuale e tracce storiche: un fenomeno interpretativo che dà origine a una relazione complessa e critica tra l’osservatore e la storia di uno spazio specifico.
This brief essay suggests a few possible lines of inquiry into the visual perception of a historical church. We will try to describe how the visual mind builds a certain image of space out of the data collected through the kinesthetic experience of an observer over time. We will then argue that certain material transformations to a historical building – damages, reconstructions, removals, restorations – may radically change its visual image, while others may have a lesser effect on the overall perception of its space. The image of a historical church will be understood as a combination of actual presence and historical traces: an interpretive phenomenon that gives rise to a complex, critical relationship between the observer and the history of a given space.
