Sommario

Summary

Taking advantage of stylistic comparisons and insights into the original painting technique gained during the restoration process, this essay proposes a new attribution of a Madonna with Child, St. John, and an angel to Luca Longhi, a Ravenna painter of the second half of the 16th century. First, the painting is contextualized, beginning with an examination of the ancient historical sources available and of the most recent scholarly contributions to its study. The identification of the canvas proposed in 1853 by the biographer of the painter, Alessandro Cappi, who saw it in the collection of Count Carlo Galletti Abbiosi in Ravenna, is then discussed. A dating to the mature phase of the painter’s career is suggested based on the reading of the style and sacred iconography. An account of the analytic study of the painting made possible by the restoration phase is also given, which allowed for the identification of the executive technique corresponding to the results emerging from the bibliography of the analysis of other paintings by Luca Longhi. Finally, in the last section of the essay, the two ancient restorations are identified, and the phases of the current restoration, which have made the artwork more fully legible, are detailed, including photographic comparison.
