Sommario

Summary

The cult of relics has always played a fundamental role in the life of the faithful, and in fact, the practice of preserving and venerating them dates back to the early centuries of Christianity. Alongside the growing spread of this cult, there was a corresponding increase in the production of works specifically made to enshrine relics: reliquaries, crafted from various materials and in diverse shapes. This study analyzes the (unpublished) reliquary boards found in the churches of Catania, dating approximately between the 18th and 19th centuries. Those built in the 19th century, in particular, are mostly wooden reliquaries placed above the altars, usually in the side aisles, serving as backdrops to Crucifixes and intended primarily to preserve the relics of Saints and Martyrs and to display them for veneration by the faithful. In line with this purpose, the containers used to exhibit relics come in various forms, made from and adorned with precious materials, which, although expressly created for specific individuals or obtained by them, also met the needs of religious orders. Therefore, the analysis of these artifacts not only reveals the cultural climate of the time but also serves as a testament to the craftsmanship of skilled woodcarvers who, though anonymous, demonstrated remarkable ability in creating these unique vehicles of devotion.
