Sommario

Summary

The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels was designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti, adapting a part of a former thermal complex from the imperial era. In 2006, the Basilica enriched its churchyard with the addition of two new bronze doors by the Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj. The two doors are inserted in the curved front of the church; they represent the only iconographic kit that identifies the sacred Christian place, otherwise confused among the ruins and the archaeological relics of Rome. The representation of L’Annonce faite à Marie captures properly the value of the Sagrato in front of the sacred space as an opportunity for dialogue with contemporary society, which is often not hostile, but substantially indifferent to the Gospel and to the intuition of Benedict XVI defined in Courtyard of the Gentiles. The value and the meaning of the reception in an architectural space open to the city finds in the artistic value of bronze a timely opportunity for comparison and evaluation between the contemporary change of the role of Christians in globalized society and the perennial possibility that the divine offers to mankind today. It is a tender acceptance of its dramas, perhaps through a glimpse away from the bandages of everyday life.
